Lives of the First World War

The original caption for this 1916 photograph (village of Losos-Guba) is incorrect; Russian sources have identified the settlement as Kiappesel’ga (in Karelia). The photograph shows the single track curving toward the log houses of the village, with the white Church of Saint George partially visible on the far left. Support for Prokudin-Gorskiĭ's work was renewed during the First World War, and in 1916 he was commissioned to photograph scenes along the new railroad. He used a special colour photography process to create a visual record of the Russian Empire in the early 20th century.
