Lives of the First World War

Map case associated with the First World War service (in the 15th Battalion, the Hampshire Regiment) of Captain Montague S Moore (VC). 'Monty' Moore won a Victoria Cross during the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917. He later became a game warden in East Africa, playing a leading role in the establishment of the Serengeti National Park (Tanzania).

Privately purchased, commercially manufactured hunting knives were frequently carried at the Front by German soldiers during the First World War. Often, as in this example, they featured 'staghorn' hilts. This knife was captured at Flers on the Somme on 15 September 1916 by 2nd Lieutenant Montague Moore of the 15th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. The 15th Hampshires captured Flers in the course of an attack which was notable for the first employment of tanks in action. 'Monty' Moore went on to win a Victoria Cross during the 3rd Battle of Ypres in 1917.
