The pave (pa-vay) road along which the Royal Irish Regiment hurriedly retreated with the Germans close behind around 6pm on 23rd August 1914, Mons, Belgium. These roads were hard on the feet of the retreating soldiers of the BEF, especially those reservists whose feet had grown soft and had not had sufficient time to grow accustomed to day-after-day of hard marching.

Caudry British Cemetery

Caudry British Cemetery which was completed after the Armistice by the concentration of graves from the German Cemetery and Audencourt British Cemetery, which lay between the villages of Audencourt and Beaumont, in the middle of fields. It was made by the Germans after the Battle of Le Cateau, and Plot 1 contained the graves of 66 soldiers from the United Kingdom (mainly of the 2nd Royal Scots and the 1st Gordons) who fell in that battle. It may therefore contain some of those unidentified soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment who fell and have no known grave.

Le Touret Memorial

The Le Touret Memorial commemorates those who fell in this sector of the Western Front from the beginning of October 1914 to the eve of the Battle of Loos in late September 1915 and who have no known grave. It was designed by John Reginald Truelove and unveiled by the British Ambassador to France, Lord Tyrrell on 22nd March 1930. The soldiers of the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment are to be found on panels 11 and 12.

The position of John Murphy's original grave

Private John Murphy 8804 was originally buried close to, it is assumed, where he fell at Le Pilly by the Germans – approximately where D Company were positioned on the battalion’s right flank. The CWGC concentration form gives the co-ordinates of the location where his body was found (36.T.5.b.30.05.) along with the bodies of Privates Edward Byrne 10896, Daniel Cronin 10888, Patrick Sweeney 6645 and 2 other unknown British soldiers. They were buried together "in one grave and are believed to be proper German Burials". Four out of the six bodies were identified as soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment through clothing, boots, G.S.buttons, numerals and discs. The bodies were exhumed in April 1927 and reburied in Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St Laurent Blangy.

Privates Patrick Doyle 5938, Robert Morrissey 6388 and William Roberts 10941 were buried by the Germans in Fournes-en-Weppes German Military Cemetery, a short distance from Le Pilly, in October 1914 (co-ordinates 36.O.31.d.8.2.). After the war, their bodies were exhumed and reburied in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery along with at least 32 other unidentified British soldiers from the same location, two of whom were officers of the Royal Irish Regiment. It is reasonable to assume that these men are some of those who fell at Le Pilly. It is also possible that others were not discovered and exhumed and so remain in Fournes-en-Weppes German Military Cemetery.

Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, where some of the men of the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment who were killed at Le Pilly, were finally laid to rest.

La Ferté-sous-Jouarre Memorial

The La Ferté-sous-Jouarre Memorial commemorates 3,740 officers and men of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) who fell at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne between the end of August and early October 1914 and have no known graves...The memorial was designed by George H. Goldsmith, a decorated veteran of the Western Front, and unveiled by Sir William Pulteney, who had commanded the III Corps of the BEF in 1914, on 4 November 1928. (From CWGC Cemetery Details)

2nd Battalion R.I.Rgt. Memorial, Mons.

The Memorial to the Royal Irish Regiment at Mons overlooks the ground on which the 2nd Battalion fought on the 23rd August 1914. It was unveiled by Lord Ypres – Field Marshal John French - on 11th November 1923.
