Lives of the First World War

Ernest's parents' grave in the old churchyard of St Peter and St Paul's Church, Little Gaddesden is marked with a stone cross above a plinth which holds the following inscription. "In loving memory of Charles Henry Nicholes who passed away Feb 5th 1937 aged 82 years, 23 years Churchwarden of this Church, also Annie Elizabeth beloved wife of the above, who passed away May 10th 1938 aged 87 years, and Ernest their second son who was killed in action October 1917."

The Roll of Honour, which hangs in St Peter & St Paul's Church, Little Gaddesden and lists 119 names of those from Little Gaddesden, Ringshall and Hudnall who served in the 1914 – 1918 War. Men who have answered their country’s call in defence of a “Scrap of Paper”.

A document showing the KRRC Statue erected in the Cathedral Close at Winchester, with the text "in memory of those gallant officers, warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and riflemen who fell during the Great War 1914-1918". It is not known when the family obtained this document but the statue was unveiled 26th May 1922

Information sent to the families of those members of the King's Royal Rifle Corps who died during the First World War, giving details of the two War Memorials at Winchester, the Bronze Statue of a Rifleman and the Roll of Honour, and of their unveiling. The final paragraph reads "The accompanying Memorial Card is presented by Field-Marshall Lord Grenfell, Senior Colonel Commandant, and all Ranks of the Regiment, in glorious memory of their Comrades, and in commemoration of the above event" i.e. the unveiling, on Wednesday May 24th 1922.

A 2018 image of the War Memorial in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, Ivinghoe. It takes the form of a round based, Portland stone column topped with a cross. The First World War entry is headed Pro/ Patria/ 1914 - 1918/. To the glory of God/ and in/ grateful remembrance/ of ... Fifteen men are listed including E Nicholes.

Late twentieth century photo of the CWGC Headstone of A/203426 Rifleman/ E Nicholes/ King's Royal Rifle Corps/ 24th October 1917 age 31, who is buried at Louverval Military Cemetery, Doignies, France, Row B, Grave 6. Below the cross on the headstone are the words: "THY WILL BE DONE".
