Portrait photograph of J W H Nicholl2 Lieutenant John William Hardford Nicholl 2 Battalion, Welsh Regiment Second Lieutenant Nicholl was born in Swansea on 24 October 1892. He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. He represented Sandhurst in sporting competitions against the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in 1912. He was posted to the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own) in 1913. In August 1914, he joined the 3rd Battalion, Welsh Regiment, and was later attached to the 2nd Battalion. While on active service with this battalion, he was killed at Gheluvelt, five miles east of Ypres, on 29 October 1914 while retaking trenches captured by the Germans. He is commemorated at the Menin Gate in Ypres.
