Title: British Army List for 1919

Description: Entry for 2nd Lt. Harold Oliver showing date of birth (which is incorrect) and his date of commission. The DOB shown is 14th December 1885 - in reality my grandfather left Sussex and went to Northern Ireland to enlist because he was advised by the recruiting sergeant at the time that even though he was only 14 years of age they would probably accept him. I believe the date of his birth is correct (14th of December) but that the year is wrong - not 1885 but 1900. So there are two dates shown in this supporting evidence - one shows the date of commission for my grandfather (which IS correct) and the date of birth (which is not).

Additional: There is ''Private Oliver'' named here and shown in the photograph of ''H'' Half Company, 2nd Battalion. My understanding is that three of 2nd Lieutenant's sons (my uncles) went to India when they were 14 - as buglers with the Royal Horse Artillery. Whilst this is conjecture only at this stage it might well be that my grandfather had been with the regiment years before the outbreak of WW1 - and according to his Medal Index Card at the time of his promotion in the field to 2nd Lieutenant he already had nearly 14 years of service under his belt. This of course is IMPOSSIBLE unless he had joined the army much earlier than 1914...

Whilst he may have been with the 2nd Battalion originally by 1918 he was obviously serving with the 1st.
