Title: LOCAL WAR CASUALTIES Swinefleet Soldiers Killed - Private Richardson

Description: Much sympathy is felt for Mrs W Richardson, of High Street, Swinefleet, in her sad bereavement by the loss of her husband, Private Walter Richardson, of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, who was killed in action on the 8th December, 1917, whilst he was fighting in Italy. The news was received in the following letter from his Commanding Officer: - "Dear Madame, It is with regret I write this letter informing you of your husband's death. I am sorry to say he was killed outright on December 8th. I have taken the liberty of taking two cards and a cap badge from his pocket, as I thought you would like them as momentos. Please accept this letter as a token of respect from his platoon and myself. If I can give you any more details, I should be only too pleased. H G Houchin, Capt. C.O. A. Company."

Description: Pte. Richardson was one of four sons of Mr W E Richardson, postman and newsagent, Swinefleet, and was formerly employed by the Aire and Calder Navigation Company, Goole. He leaves a widow and four young children. He joined the colours in March 1916, and has been on active service in France and Italy. The other three sons of Mr W E Richardson are all serving with the colours, George, the eldest is in the Rifle Brigade in France. Charles is in the Royal Engineers, and has been three months in France, constructing railways. Harold is in the Army Veterinary Corps, staioned in Egypt and has been there two years.

Description: A memorial service was held in Swinefleet Parish Church on Sunday last for Pte. Walter Richardson. The deceased was killed in action whilst fighting in Italy. There was a large congregation present including a detachment of the Swinefleet Volunteers. Amongst the chief mourners were:- Mrs W Richardson, wife of the deceased, Mr and Mrs W E Richardson, Mr and Mrs J B Ibbetson, Miss H Richardson and company of members of the club that the deceased belonged to.The Rev. G H Newton BA, officiated at the service and chose for his text St. Paul's epistle to the Thessalonians, chapter 4 verses 14 and 18.
