Additional: The certificate names Fred's parents as Jonas and Mary Ann (nee Rhodes) Rusby. Their home address, shown on the certificate, was 46, Sweet Street, Holbeck, Leeds. My father, George Rusby, son of Fred, often talked about his grandparents' family and their home in Sweet Street.

Additional: My father told me that Fred's prostate problem came on slowly was not spotted till his kidneys had failed and then it was too late to save him. Dad was in Canada at the time.

Description: From the little1918 war diary Fred kept. Written in pencil.

Additional: Fred copied two poems (or extracts) which he found to be relevant to his war experience. Despite his dislike of the war and war in general Fred felt he was duty bound to enlist when required to do so. His son, George, wrote up Fred's war story in an unpublished book 'Straight is the line of duty'.

Additional: Fred kept a war diary for 1918 but it records an outline of his military career from 1917. Fred's official war record has not survived.

Title: Called to Higher Service: Fred Rusby

Description: Obituary and death announcements for Fred Rusby from the family album.

Additional: The obituary charts Fred's service to the Sons of Temperance, an organisation and cause he which was so dear to him. It shows that he was the Grand Treasurer in the Grand Division but also valued for his advice and judgement. The obituary also carries a picture of Fred in later life, a copy of which my father had in his room till his own death. The obituary and one of the death notices confirms Fred's cremation service at Lawnswood Crematorium, Leeds. The other death notice is for Fred's wife, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rusby. She died in 1964 at her daughter Florence's house.
