Strawberry harvest Watson Failes FarmJust as Vic went to war, just in time for the start of the battle of the Somme, his father George was leading the strawberry harvest on the farm of Mr Watson Failes. Vic's future mother in law is on the rightContributed by:

Sidney Day VCVic was in action with his unit at Malakhoff Farm. He served in the same group as Sidney Day of 11 Suffolks who won a VC for his actions, one of seven won by Norfolk men in WW1.Contributed by:

Tilney All Saints church stained glass windowThis window is in memory of Gerard Watson Failes. Though from a different regiment he died at Bailleul two days after Vic was injured. Vic and his family worked on the Watson Failes family farm.Contributed by:

Vic Russell Woburn AbbeyConvalescing at Woburn Abbey. There was a good surgical unit there and Vic was treated there. he believed that he was sent there in part because he shared the family name of the Duke of Bedford. He corresponded with the pharmacist. Vic was also treated at hospitals in Colchester, Woodford Green, Wisbech and Cambridge. He was eventually discharged in November 1919Contributed by:

Vic receiving Imperial Service MedalVic eventually managed to get work as a postman after WW1. He was awarded the Imperial Service Medal for meritorious service. This included driving with barely any lights alongside the treacherous dykes of the Fens during the WW2 blackout. Date around 1962Contributed by:
