Gravestone Banstead All Saints ChurchyardAccording to his Army Service Record he was born in Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey (Census records say Banstead), One of 11 children of Charles & Elizabeth Rosa nee Liddle (4 had died by 1911). His brothers Alfred George #60448 London Reg’t & Thomas #9720 Devon Reg’t were killed in action in the Great War. Stanley enlisted in the E Surrey Reg’t Special Reserve at Kingston-on-Thames 7 November 1912, upping his age by 1year. Mobilized 8 August 1914. To France 1 April 1915. Wounded GSW abdomen probably late May 1916 & by 2 June 1916 had been invalided to a UK hospital (likely to be 2nd Birmingham War Hosp., Northfield where he appeared before a Medical board 19 September 1916 prior to discharge). SWB No. 54316 issued to him 8 December 1916, official discharge date 3 October 1916. His occupation during Army Service seems to read ‘Packer Clerk’, Sobriety ‘good’, fairly reliable & intelligent.
