Prisoner of War.Corporal Ernest Stockton of the 17th Manchesters, seated left front row. Like many others within the Pals battalions, Ernest Stockton had passed through the Training Reserve Battalions before being sent out to France, Corporal Stockton was taken prisoner near Savy soon after the actions here on the 22nd of March 1918, Ernest's left wrist was shattered by shrapnel and he was, for many weeks, in danger of have having to lose the arm.

St Quentin.The town of St Quentin in 1917, the catherdral dominated the area, which by 1918, had been reduced to a roofless and silent shadow of its former splendour.Contributed by:

The Battle for Manchester Hill.Overwhelming concentrations of German troops were assembled in St Quentin prior to their attack on the morning of the 21st of March 1918. On that morning the superiority of the German artillery and the fortuitous intervention of a dense spring mist meant that their advance was relatively unhindered by the British defence whose plans were thrown into disarray.Contributed by:

Prisoner of War Camps.The POW camps were harsh and spartan. The impact of the Allied blockade meant that food was scarce and of poor quality. Many Manchester men were destined to die as prisoners of war.Contributed by:
