Bernard as a small boy with family in Claygate

This picture is probably taken around the time of the 1901 census, outside their cottage in Claygate, Surrey. Bernard, who looks about 4, is with his Father and Mother, younger sister Lillian and baby Fredrick, who was noted as 4mths old in the 1901 census.

Copy of a page from the Silver War Badge roll for the South Wales Borderers. The SWB was given to all military personnel who had been honorably discharged through wounds, illness or both.

Hospital Ship Llandovery Castle

This is a picture of the Llandovery Castle Hospital Ship, which Bernard was transferred to when suffering with maleria on 4th October 1916. He was then moved from the ship to the Manoel Hospital on Malta on 9th October 1916. The ship was later torpedoed and sank by German submarine U-86 on 27th June 1918. U-86 infamously opened fire on the lifeboats, leaving only one afloat with 24 survivors from a total of 258.

Troopship SS Huntsend

This is the troopship SS Huntsend that transported Bernard and the rest of the 8th SWB from Marseilles on 30th October 1915 to Salonika. They disembarked at Salonika on 6th November 1915. This is confirmed by both the regiment's war diary and Bernard's individual records.

Troopship SS St Seiriol

This is the troopship SS St Seiriol, which carried the 8th South Wales Borderers including Bernard from Folkestone on 5th September 1915, arriving at Boulogne in the early hours of 6th September, where they disembarked and marched to the Ostrohove Great Rest Camp, before moving by train to the front.

Bernard, standing on the far left of the back row. This was taken in October 2014 at Seaford, in East Sussex, where the 8th SWB's were stationed for training soon after forming in Brecon. None of the other solider's names are known or named on the back of the picture.

Bernard with Private Arthur Beams of 8th SWB's

Probably while convalescing with Maleria in Malta in 1917, Bernard is pictured with Arthur Beams who was his sniper (Bernard was a sniper's spotter). The notes on the back of the picture says "Malta, Valletta 1917, Bernard Stone, Arthur Beams of Long Ashton, Bristol"

HT Port Sydney

This is the troop ship HT Port Sydney, which transported Bernard from Malta back to 22nd Infantry Battalion depot and his regiment in Salonika following his bout of Maleria. Bernard was away from the front line for 4 months for treatment and convalscence.
