CWGC Blighty Valley close to Authuille where Albert died in 1916

1901 census for 23 School Street Rotherham. Albert with parents Elijah and Susannah and sister Lill, are Lily Willoughby. The house, and much of School Street, was built by William Swallow who was Alberts Grandfather.

Albert could have Left the Army due to TIME EXPIRED 24/05/16 when he went back to England on leave. He CHOSE to return to his unit, (prob 5th Co) 1/5 York Lancaster. The next entry after he returned to The Front says of course.. Killed in Action. 23/09/16

Memorial Plaque Roll of Honour inside the Church , details with the Roll of Honour say.........Albert Clifford Swallow was born in Rotherham in 1894 to Elijah and Susannah Swallow of 19 St Johns Road Eastwood. He enlisted in Sep 1914 to the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 2245 and landed in France on 13 Apr 1915 . He suffered gas poisoning in Dec 1915 and had the opportunity to leave the Army as a “time expired” territorial in Apr 1916. He was killed in action on 23 Sep 1916 aged 22 during a raid on German trenches near Thiepval. He is buried at Blighty Valley cemetery. I (Pam Willoughby) don't know where this info with the plaque came from....but "assume" as other details are correct that it might have come from his parents who lived locally. However I have no written family evidence to confirm where this description came from.

1901 Census image of Alberts family living 23 School Street Rotherham with other family in same street. William Swallow was Alberts Grandfather a brick maker/builder who built house in School Street in which they then lived.

1911 census Albert and family living 112 St Johns Road Eastwood Rotherham with his family. Sister Lily then married Walter Willoughby in 1916. The family were living at 4 Gordon Terrace Rotherham when Albert was Killed in Action 23 Sept 1916.

Headstone Inscription for Albert " Ever in Our Thoughts" was chosen for him by his family. The Imperial War Graves Commission personal Inscription form. Paid for by family £4.11s
