Additional: Frank Ernest Thomas's service number was 10278. This website shows the soldier with service number 10151 joined up on 21st March 1914. This strongly suggests that Frank joined up in 1914. This is confirmed by looking at service numbers around 10278, on Ancestry WW1 Pension and Service records e.g. 10269 - 3 Sep 1914; 10273 - 10 Aug 1914; 10282 - 7 Sep 1914. I believe the service number / date correspondence was affected by batches of numbers being allocated to different recruiting offices.
