A widow with two small children.My paternal Grandmother and the widow of W.Thornton.in 1918. The 3 and 4 yr old beloved sons of a man who was one of the most senior soldier's left one dreadful day.Contributed by:

A risky job.....One of over 100 postcards sent home to my Grandmother. This is a rare one since William was usually very upbeat and tried not to cause concern.Contributed by:

The handwritten message on the back of the card.William explains the risky job - woe betide if you are caught.... My Grandfather was a pacifist at the outbreak of WW1 but went in the belief that he needed to do his bit to protect his family.His hair and face changed during the four years he served.
