    'Trench gramophone', associated with the First World War service of C R Tobitt. Tobitt was commissioned into King's Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC) in 1915 and transferred to Royal Engineers (RE) 1916, serving with 62 Field Company at Ypres, Arras, Messines, Somme, St Quentin and La Madeleine.

    This is one of Lt Tobitt's Field Message Books, known as Army Book 153. It was used to record the daily movement/status of soldiers in his 2 companies or requests/delivery for stores and still has the original carbon paper in it!

    On this day, things must have been quiet, as Lt Tobitt's message itemises the things that he is sending back to his HQ. The list includes rolls of wire, picket fencing, wood frames etc. Obviously HQ had also wanted bricks to come back on the coal lorry, but he reminds them that coal day is Monday!

  • Pages from Officers Record of Service Book 489
    This shows the centre pages of Lt. Tobitt's Record of Service Book. From this is clear to see his progression from the Reserve in 1914 through Officer Training with the Inns of Court Regiment to the Kings Royal Rifles and then on to the Royal Engineers, where he stayed until demobilised in 1919. In December 1916 he was gassed and did not return to duty until March 1917.

  • Commanding Officer's Notes-Record of Service
    This are the final 2 pages of Lt. Tobitt's Record of Service Book and show the hand written notes by each of his Commanding Officers when he finished his duties with them. They are all complimentary and emphasise his abilities with horses and refer to his work in the final stages of the War and during the "clearing up" period in 1919.
