1914 - 18.

Private Frederick Harry Waldron, 8949 No V111 platoon, B Coy 2nd City Battalion. Harry Waldron was a bugler within the Battalion band, and therefore a stretcher bearer in action on the 1st of July. Harry died of wounds received during his battalion's attack on Montauban that day. He was twenty years old. The photograph show him with his fiancée, Miss Cox of Withington Manchester. He had no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial to the missing. Harry was one of three Waldron brothers from the suburb of Withington who served within the First Manchester Pals Brigade. His eldest brother Lance Corporal Benson Waldron, was also severely wounded this day, but recovered from his wounds.

In front is the mother of all three brothers, Clara Waldron, and her youngest son, Hugh, aged six. Lance Corporal Benson Waldron, the eldest brother, was severely wounded in the leg during the attacks through Montauban towards Montauban Alley. His wound was staunched by a tourniquet made from 2nd Lieutenant Nash's puttees. Hospitalized at home, Benson of the 3rd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment who was stationed at Cleethorpes. Benson Waldron then went underwent officer training and was Commissioned into the 19th Manchester's as an officer in C Company. He was destined to be killed at the Battle of Paschendaele in 1917. Harry's other brother, Ernest, was unscathed and survived the war, later to served in Egypt during the Second World War.

Montuaban 'was practically deserted and was completely in ruins. It was almost impossible to trace the run of the streets.'
