Title: Thomas Herbert Wallace receives commission in Army Service Corps, July 1915

Description: BNL, 23 July 1915. 'Mr Thomas Herbert Wallace, BA, LLB, TCD, only son of Mr Thomas B Wallace, solicitor, Regentville, Dromore, has received a commission as second-lieutenant in the Army Service Corps, and on Monday next will proceed to Aldershot for training. Lieutenant Wallace has been a member of the Officers' Training Corps for the past six years. He was one of the original members of the corps formed at Campbell College, and subsequently joined the corps at Trinity College, Dublin. He is apprenticed to his father, and was about to take his final examination of the Incorporated Law Society, when he decided to abandon his studies in order to respond to the call of King and country'.

Description: '2nd Lt Thomas Herbert Wallace, only son of Mr T B Wallace, solicitor, Regentville and Sylvan Hill, Dromore, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Captain Wallace was granted a commission shortly after the outbreak of war through the OTC, of Trinity College, and was attached to the Army Service Corps, with which he served about a year at the Base Supply Depot at Havre. From this he volunteered for service in the Royal Garrison Artillery, and for the past ten months has been through most of the severe fighting with a Siege Battery on the Western front. He is at present spending fourteen days' leave with his parents. Captain Wallace is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin'.

With a very heavy fire on a road and much congestion of traffic, he worked for hours, until wounded, to clear the way for his battery. By his exertions, without regard to his personal safety, he was instrumental in saving a large number of vehicles.

Description: Captain Thomas Herbert Wallace, of Regent House, Dromore, Co Down, who has died suddenly [on 27 July 1967], was a noted public figure...In the first World War he served with distinction in the Royal Garrison Artillery and was severely wounded in action. He was awarded the Military Cross and also the Croix de Guerre by the French Government and was twice mentioned in despatches...in 1959 he was awarded the OBE for his public service.
