Map showing in red the attack of the 50th Bn CEF
The Canadian troops attacked in blinding sleet, which led to many battalions getting lost in the open terrain. The 75th battalion to the left of George’s 50th Bn veered too far east, leaving George’s battalion unprotected at the sides. Under heavy German machine gun fire on both sides, they dug in close to Desire Trench, but had to retreat back to Regina Trench where they had started from. Casualties are shown on another image of the War Diary, totalling 12 officers and 213 “other ranks” killed, missing or wounded.
