Title: ACT OF COURAGE

Description: ALL CASUALTIES AFFECTING “OTHER RANKS” (ATTACHED FROM OTHER COPRS & REGIMENTS) CO... ACT OF COURAGE The base Commandant desires to express his appreciation of the pluck and disregard of his own safety shewn by No. 64944 Pte. E.W. Cornwall., R.A.M.C. at Pont de l’Arche on May 2nd 1918, in his endeavours to save the life of a young Frenchwoman who had who had thrown herself down a well. The well was 57 feet deep, very narrow and with 9 feet of water at the bottom, but Pte. Cornwall immediately descended and, at great personal risk owning to the unsafe condition of the rope, enabled the body to be drawn up. Pte. Cornwall’s efforts lasted nearly an hour and he himself reached the top in an exhausted condition. A record of the above will be made in the Field Conduct Sheet (A.F. B122) of Pte. Cornwall, in accordance with K.R.para.1919 (XIV). (B.R.O 3499 dated 13-5-18) L/Cpl. Bowley, P. R.E. 17-5-18 to 17-6-18

Additional: The image was taken when visiting the archives in Kew, England. I was going through the Routine order books for the ERS in Pont de l’Arche in 1918, when I came across this.
