Basil Bowdler and Intelligence colleagues, 1914

GHQ I(a) was based at Saint-Omer until May 1916. This team was responsible for analysing information about the enemy.

Charteris (left) led the Intelligence Section at GHQ: Bowdler is show on the right; he gained his DSO in January 1916 and was promoted Lt-Col later that year.

Basil Bowdler with wife Helen c1911

Bowdler married Helen Dalrymple Copland-Crawford of Hove in 1911. He was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1892, and promoted Major in 1912. She died of a brain tumour in 1932; he lived until 1960.
