Lewis M1914 (air)Fitted to BE2c 4112, in which 2nd Lt Frederick Sowrey shot down Zeppelin L32 over Billericay on the night of 23/24 September 1916. Attached label states that it was "specially stripped" for him. It was necessary to keep the weight of aircraft operating against German airships to a minimum, to enable them to gain enough height to carry out their attacks. Sowrey won the Distinguished Service Order for his deed, and went on to achieve 12 further "kills" on the Western Front. He survived until 1969.Contributed by:
