Title: Obituary of Arthur Robert Burton

Description: Lieut.-Col. Arthur Robert Burton, Indian Army, who died on January 24th, while on active service, aged 45 years, entered the Army in 1892 as second lieutenant in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. In 1895 he joined the Hyderabad Contingent, Indian Army. He was attached to the 2nd Battalion 4th Gurkhas for the Tirah campaign of 1897-98, for which he held the medal and two clasps. After taking part in the operations on the North-West Frontier between 1915 and 1917, with an interval of service at Muscat, hepioceeded on active service out of India, and con- tracted pneumonia, of which he died. He was an accomplished linguist, with a profound know- ledge of Oriental character. Lieutenant-Colonel Burton was the eighth of the nine sons of the late General Edmond Francis Burton, Madras Staff Corps, and married Florence Evelyne Hood, daughter of Brigade-Surgeon Trehane Symons, who survives him with one son and two daughters.
