Lives of the First World War

Sergeant Ernest Charles Vizard 4 Battalion, Australian Imperial Force Sgt Vizard was born in London in 1889 and emigrated to Canada in 1909. On outbreak of war in 1914, he enlisted in 10 Battalion, Canadian Mounted Infantry. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Egypt and France before being discharged for theft on 26 April 1915. He then travelled to Australia where he re-enlisted with 4 Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. Sgt Vizard sailed with his new unit on board SS Makarini from Sydney on 19 July 1916 but was discharged again, having been diagnosed with a heart condition, on 10 December 1917 with the rank of private.
