    Memorial plaque naming: FREDERICK PATTERSON BULL. Unfortunately many of the army records spell Fred's second name incorrectly, as it refers to his grandmother's maiden name PATTISON.

  • Knife sent by FP Bull to his cousin
    The knife was sent by Fred Bull to his 13-year-old cousin James Goodfellow in July 1917. The knife, 26.5 cm long, folds like a hunting knife. A running puma is stamped on the blade which is 2 cm wide.

  • Letter from FP Bull to James Goodfellow
    July 15/1917 No. 19894, Hut 11, D. Coy W.C.D. Knowsley Park Prescot Nr. Liverpool Dear Jimmy, I am sending along with this the knife I promised you. I’ve never cleaned the blade nor sharpened it since January last, so you’ll be able to spend an hour or two very profitably on a grindstone. The rust on the blade is probably due to bloodstains, although the last thing I cut with it was one of the sausages I was telling you of. If anyone asks you if it is a real German, you can tell them I got it from a Corporal about 7 ft. tall at 3 o’clock on the morning of Jan. 12th at Munich Trench, Beaumont-Hamel: that is, if you can remember all that. Most likely, though, you’ll be glad to be rid of the thing shortly, because your mother will get tired of sewing up the holes it’ll make in your pockets. Kind regards to all, Your affectionate cousin, Fred The letter mentions the Munich Trench which was the German trench captured by the 7th Division on 11 Jan 1917.

  • Letter to aunts and uncle dated 16 April 1917
    I ought to apologise for not having written to you before, but I expect Dad will have told you, it was not for want of thought. You will see by the writing that it is a matter of difficulty to make a letter; in fact, I am lying now on one side with the pad leaning against my locker & my left leg stretched out as stiff as a ramrod. I can tell you it becomes very monotonous at times, but I always think of the worse time I would be having in front of the Hindenburg line if that providential shell hadn’t exploded. It seemed rather strange that after twelve months away from the regiment, I should be only six hours in the line before I was wounded. I had another X-Ray examination a few days ago & expect to be moved to a private infirmary at Kidderminster any moment. It is run by a civilian doctor & staff of nurses, so I should have every attention there, although this place isn’t so bad. Well, I must close now, as there isn’t much more to say; hoping you all keep the best of health.

    Fred P Bull joined the 2nd Urmston Scout Troop on 12 Feb 1913 as scout number 42. He went camping in Wales with the scouts in July 1913 and became a scout leader.

  • Obituary: Sergt. Frederick P. Bull, D.C.M.
    Details of Fred being wounded at 2 a.m. and his death at 5.40 p.m. on 18 July 1918. The Commanding Officer of his regiment commends him and his Company Commander who had been with him from when they first came to France is full of praise.
