Description: " Jimmie Ross had a typical upbringing for a young man of his background. He was schooled at Upper Canada College, and he then enrolled in Royal Military College in Kingston." "Britain declared war on Aug. 4, 1914, and right away Canada offered to send 25,000 men. Toronto was at the time an overwhelmingly British city, so it had no shortage of volunteers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force: more than three-quarters of the eligible men in the city volunteered. As would-be recruits flooded the armouries in early August, Ross — by then a lieutenant — helped out with medical examinations."
