  • John Collins: 1916-20 RN service
    John enlists Clonakilty in 1916. On Vivid II books, Devonport. Service No SS117462. He saw action at Jutland on HMS Dublin later in 1916. He moves from Stoker II class to I class and is promoted to Leading Stoker in Jan 1920. His 1916 engagement totalled 12 years: the 5 years Special Service ended Dec 1920. The remaining engagement of 7 years is disclosed in the next record and John has a new Service No.

    John remains on Devonport's books (Vivid II) for the second phase of his 12 year engagement: 1920-1928. John remains a Leading Stoker. "BADGES" are Good Conduct Badges after 4 years unblemished service-John has two. Worn on best Blues uniform like a corporal stripes-maximum of 3 stripes worn.

    First of two pages showing John's RN service from 1929 to 1945. He retains his Service No K59398-still on Devonport's books (HMS Tamar, Vivid II or Drake). His Good Conduct Badges for 4 years unblemished service moves up from 2 to 3. Later misdemeanours likely lost him badges-down to 1. However they are eventually restored to 3.

  • John Collins 1929-45 RN service
    Part 2 of 2 John Collins' Royal Navy service 1929 to 1945. In Feb 1929 whilst on the China station he re-enlists, having served out his previous 12-year engagement. John is discharged PUNS in Aug 1945 (Physically unfit for Naval Service) having served continuously for 29 years and 7 months.

    John Collins in naval uniform behind the groom in June 1945; 2 months before he completes almost 30 years in the Royal Navy. It is a double-wedding and he has his hand on the shoulder of Peter Hannaway - one of the grooms and his drinking partner in the local pub in Mullaghbane, county Armagh.

    The citation records that John Collins, Acting Leading Stoker (No. ss117462) was awarded the Victory Medal (V) and the British War Medal (B); awarded aboard HMS Ambrose. John served on HMS Ambrose between 8 Oct 1921 and 8 Feb 1924.
