Description: This birth certificate shows J C Taylor's true birth date of 10th September 1876. All his Naval records show a date in April 1877, but this is because he reduced his age by 7 months when signing up, so that he could enter the Navy as a 'Boy'.

Additional: J C Taylor was my maternal grandfather, and it was well known in the family that he pretended to be younger when he joined the Navy, as he was keen to start as a 'Boy'. I also believe he tried to join earlier as a 'Boy' but was too short. but went back when he was a bit taller - hence his nick-name 'Tich' .
