Description: Ted Duffield’s name will be spoken in the Exercise for all time, for he was one of the greats. We knew him primarily through ringing but his range of activity and skills was prodigious - miller, organist, national croquet player and mayor of Colchester. EPD was part of a notable ringing family from Buxton in Norfolk and rose to become Master of the Essex and the College Youths. Before the war he was a member of William Pye’s band and afterwards of Wilfred Williams’. Unconventional in style, Ted could ring anywhere in the circle, on any number and any weight, with a special love for twelve-bell ringing and London Surprise Major.
