Description: John Vaughan Campbell (1876-1944) Brigadier-General VC CMG DSO. GOC Infantry Brigade Eton College, RMC Sandhurst Coldstream Guards Son of Hon. Ronald Campbell, professional soldier killed in Zulu War. Commissioned 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards 1896. South African War, DSO. CO 3rd Coldstream July 1915 - Nov 1916. A well-known rider to hounds and huntsman. Used his Shropshire Harriers hunting horn to good effect at Ginchy in September 1916, rallying his men, leading them against German machine-guns which had decimated the first two waves of attackers. Subsequently known as ‘Tally Ho VC’. Nov 1917 brigadier-general and GOC 137th (Staffordshire) Brigade, 46th (North Midland) Division TF. For most of his command routine of trench holding, but 29 Sep 1918 spearheaded 46th Division’s breaking of the Hindenburg Line at Belle Eglise. Achievement recognised five days before war ended by transfer to GOC 3rd (Guards) Brigade.

Title: Brigadier-General John Vaughn Campbell VC

Description: ONE of Oswestry’s most famous recipients of the highest military honour for bravery was John Vaughan Campbell. ​ As Major and Brevet Lieutenant Colonel of the Third Battalion Coldstream Guards, Mr Campbell, of Broom Hall, was honoured with a Victoria Cross in recognition for “most conspicuous bravery and able leading in an attack”. His achievements, of which the Victoria Cross was just one of many are recorded locally in Oswestry Museum

Title: Guide to the Victoria Cross and George Cross: John V Campbell

Description: On 15th September 1916 at Ginchy, France, Lieutenant Colonel Campbell took personal command of the third line when the first two waves of his battalion had been decimated by machine-gun and rifle fire. He rallied his men and led them against the enemy machine-guns, capturing the guns and killing the personnel. Later in the day he again rallied the survivors of his battalion and led them through very heavy hostile fire. His personal gallantry and initiative at a very critical moment enabled the division to press on and capture objectives of the highest tactical importance.
