Description: This is a letter from John McShane's wife Ethel, written after her arrival in Australia with her husband after the war

Additional: The letter was written to my grandmother, Edith Burton, who was Ethel's older sister. Ethel had married John McShane (usually known as Jack although it seems he was sometimes referred to as Boni) in England in 1919. It is not known where or how they met but Jack was twice sent to England on sick leave, once with gas poisoning and again with an old wrist injury which is mentioned in the letter. Ethel speaks of a previous letter sent from Cape Town and I have in my possession a leaf, probably protea, which bears an inscription: 'With love from Jack & Ethel Cape Town Aug: 1919.

Additional: The baby mentioned in the letter must be my aunt, Edith's daughter Hilda, and Ernie - Mother's Boy - is my father. I doubt there was anything wrong with his nose, just that it was 'put out of joint' by the arrival of the new baby. I know he wanted her sent back! The Daisy who is mentioned is another of Ethel's sisters (real name Beatrice) and Dorothy is her daughter. Will is Ethel's older brother. Ethel looks forward to having four or more children but I can find no record that she had any. How sad.

The full document is 20 pages long and there is not enough time left for me to enter all the information so I have selected this page as it sets out McShane's movements from Enlistment to Discharge in chronological order. It is interesting to note that he was Absent Without Leave from 25.1.19 to 5.2.19 from Monte Video Camp, Weymouth. As he had just got married in London on 21.1.19 perhaps he decided to extend the honeymoon. He was awarded 12 days Field Punishment No.2 and a total forfeiture of 24 days pay
