letter to sister Eva Bishop, November 12 1916p1. Written near Flers in the Somme area, France. Lloyd was in the centre of action in the worst period of fighting in the mud, rain and disease of theFlanders trenches. A grim account.Contributed by:

letter to sister Eva Bishop, April 2 1916p1. Lloyd would have just returned from leave in England where he had done an Armourer's training course but he makes no mention of this. He was probably back in the Somme area around Viller-Bretonneux. Tommy (Aufty) Aufderheide was the brother of Lloyd's future wife, Maude. The length of the war put a strain on some pre-war romances and there is some reference to this here. Concern about managing the market garden at home in South Australia since the deaths of his brothers Wal and Alf seems to be surfacing. Two weeks after this letter was sent his mother wrote to General Birdwood asking for Lloyd to be released from service. Lloyd can hardly wait to get back home.Contributed by:

letter to sister Eva Bishop, May 9 1918p1. This is clearly in a recovery area well behind the front lines in the chateaux country. Lloyd is recovering from the effects of a mustard gas attack, which occurred in the German offensive in the Viller-Bretonneux area inmate April 1918. Lloyd's mother has already written her request to have him discharged on compassionate grounds.Contributed by:

Letter from Eva Dunstan Bishop to General BirdwoodLloyd's mother wrote to General Birdwood requesting Lloyd's discharge on compassionate grounds following the deaths of Alf and Wal. Very poignant, especially regarding the effects of their deaths on their father. Letter below is the copy of the approval for his discharge (July 8 1918) although he did not return to Australia till October.Contributed by:
