A matter-of-fact account of the extreme close quarter fighting. A defused "egg-bomb" grenade is among the war souvenirs still held. letter to mother, Eva Dunstan Bishop, July 25 1917Alf's 3rd Division is still in the Messines area. Written behind the lines with the physical strain of battle and poor rations showing up. The "nursery" referred to was part of the Western front where new troops were given first battle experience. Observation balloons were used by the artillery to direct fire. p1Contributed by:

letter to mother, Eva Dunstan Bishop, June 4 1917Written from the trenches on the eve of the Battle for Messines Ridge. Huge mines were exploded under the German trench system to open the battle. This was part of the Third Battle of Ypres which went on till November 1917. p1Contributed by:

letter to mother, Eva Dunstan Bishop, Dec. 20 1916Written in England from Durrington on the Salisbury Plain. He has been in hospital. Respiratory illness was common in the freezing camps on the Plain. Alf is complaining about being left there as a training instructor for reinforcements. He tries a soldier's trick (phony telegram) to get some more leave and also tries to pull strings to get posted to France. p1Contributed by:

He has picked up some French language which he tries out on his sister. The need for proper rest and recuperation is very obvious in the tone of his letter. p1&4Contributed by:
