Lives of the First World War

Portrait of 7281 Sapper (Spr) Charles King Brothers, 5th Reinforcements, 6th Field Company Engineers, of Toowoomba, Qld. A draper prior to enlisting on 2 October 1915, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Star of Victoria on 31 March 1916. Spr Brothers later transferred to the 5th Field Company Engineers. He died of wounds on 22 April 1917, at Bullecourt, France, aged 19 years. He was a descendant of Phillip Gidley King, Third Governor of NSW, one of over 50 whom served in the First World War.

A draper prior to enlistment, he had previously served for four years with the Citizens Military Forces, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Sgt Brothers embarked from Sydney with the 5th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Star of Victoria on 31 March 1916. Later transferring to the 5th Field Company Engineers, Sgt Brothers died of wounds at Bullecourt, France, on 22 April 1917, aged 19 years. He was one of over 50 descendants of Phillip Gidley King, Third Governor of NSW, to serve in the First World War.
