William, Jean and Charles StobieIn the book The Last Battle: Soldier Settlement in Australia 1916–1939, by Bruce Scates and Melanie Oppenheimer it was reported that William and his wife had been battling against adverse conditions ever since they took up his "block" in Barraba after serving in the Australian army during WW1. 'The country being practically virgin it is very hard for me to make headway.' it was even harder for Jean. ' I have been here seven years and still living in a tin humpie which makes my wife very discontented.' It wasn't all glamour in the land down under.
