Description: Sergeant Major Flora Sandes chats to a Serbian officer on a street corner, Salonika, Greece. Sergeant Major Sandes fought with the Serbian army during the campaign which resulted in the fall of Monastir. She was wounded by a Bulgarian hand grenade and was subsequently decorated with the Cross of Kara-George. She was known as "Our Joan of Arc" by the Serbians.

I intend to donate the collection of papers and photographs that were left in my custody to the Imperial War Museum. This will make the material readily available to those making a serious study and living within reach of London or Manchester but it will be less accessible to those having a general interest in Flora but unable to justify the travelling involved.

Title: The remarkable Captain Flora Sandes – the only British woman to serve as a front-line soldier in WW1

Description: On 28 July 1914 Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia and within a week all the major European powers had become embroiled in what became the First World War. A week later, Flora was on her way to Serbia. She had joined a St. John Ambulance unit of 36 women raised by American nurse Mabel Grouitch to aid the humanitarian crises now developing in Serbia. They arrived at the town of Kragujevac which was on the frontline of Serbia’s fight against the Austro-Hungarian offensive. She worked in military hospitals tending the Serbian wounded, initially communicating with them through sign language. By October 1915, her Serbian was fluent enough for her to join the Serbian Red Cross and work in an ambulance for the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Serbian Army. The 2nd Regiment was known as the ‘Iron Regiment’ and spent most of its time in the front line.

Title: Pistol belonging to Flora Sandes

Description: This pistol is a typical example of the inexpensive 7.65mm calibre self-loading pistols produced by a myriad of small gun-making concerns in the Basque region of Spain from the 1900s to the 1930s. During the First World War, many of these pistols were purchased by Allied governments, in search of a quick answer to shortfalls in their own production. This particular weapon was carried by Flora Sandes, a British woman who served with the Serbian Army during the First World War. Initially intending to act as a nurse, she enlisted in the Army in time to take part in the long retreat which followed the collapse of Serbia in 1916. She fought in the frontline and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major. The pistol shows signs of damage from grenade fragments, which wounded her in 1916. After the war Sandes remained in Yugoslavia, marrying the emigrée White Russian general, Yuri Yudenitch. She later returned to England and died in 1956.
