Born at St. Pierre, Martinique, Windward Islands. M.D. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: 1. Memorial: PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, UK. Joined HM Forces Nov 1904. Was on the Reserve at the outbreak of war. As Surg Lt of "Good Hope", went down in the engagement off Coronel, 1 Nov 1914 FYB1919 Commemorated on Port of Spain Cenotaph.

Title: The First Casualties in the Royal Canadian Navy

Description: Radium and the Retired Naval Surgeon by Dr. Stewart Jackson ([email protected]), (c) 2001 On August 31st 1911, Dr Fernand L de Verteuil, MD(Edin), MRCS(Eng), LRCP(Lond), Surg RN(ret), read a paper entitled "Radium in the Treatment of Disease" to the Annual Meeting of the BC Medical Association in Vancouver. Dr de Verteuil, a retired Naval Surgeon, returned to sea at the outset of the Great War but was drowned in the sinking of HMS Good Hope at the Battle of Coronel off the coast of Chile on November 1st 1914.
