"This memorial, now listed as an historic monument, was erected at the instigation of Carrie Whitehead J.P. in September 1915 and is recognised as the first community World War One Memorial to be erected in this country. It was given "Grade II Listed Building" status in August 1999. The War Memorial 1914 - 1919 Rawtenstall Cemetery Roll of Honour This cross was erected by Carrie Whitehead, September 1915 that it might be some comfort to those who lost men very dear to them In grateful memory of the men of Rawtenstall who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914 - 1918 He will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord will wipe away tears from all faces. Title: The Elder Dempster Fleet in the War

Description: During the First World War Elder Dempster Lines, trading between Liverpool and West Africa, lost upwards of 40 steamers. When war broke out in 1914 their fleet consisted of a hundred and one ships. By 1918 they could muster only fifty eight. Between the 17th and 29th April 1917 alone they lost four steamers, all falling victim to U-boats. Others met their fate at the hands of raiders such as the NYANGA which was sunk by the German cruiser KAISER WILHELM DER GROSSE off the coast of North Africa. Some hit mines, many were sunk by U-boats, and one, the YOLA, left New York for England and was never seen again - her fate remaining a mystery. This book records some of the more spectacular losses and includes a Roll of Honour. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece of HM Hospital Ship EBANI.73 pp., guarded cold. frontis., + 10 photo-plates. Two-tone brown cloth ; gilt ; gilt 'ship' design to front cover. 28 x 20cm.

Title: SS Orduna

Description: Cunard. Requisitioned as an auxiliary cruiser and troop transport in the First World War running from Halifax, Canada to Liverpool. In January 1915 Orduna rescued the Russian crew of the sailing ship Loch Torridon, which had sprung a leak while transporting timber off the west coast of Ireland. Later in July 1915, en route to New York City, Orduna was targeted by a U-boat. The torpedo, which was spotted by Captain Hughes-Parry, missed the ship, which arrived safely.

Description: Alfred Holt and Company, trading as Blue Funnel Line, was a UK shipping company that was founded in 1866 and operated merchant ships for 122 years. It was one of the UK's larger shipowning and operating companies, and as such had a significant role in the country's overseas trade and in the Great War. They had offices in Liverpool and were heavily involved in troop and ammunition movements. Blue funnel lost 16 ships and 80 Officers and Men in the Great War. Ships of the Blue Funnel fleet all had names from classical Greek legend or history – Harry Fenton served on Phyruss (named after King Pyrrhus of Epirus 318-272 B.C.) and Peleus (named after the mythical King of Aegina and father of Achilles)

Additional: Some modern references have claimed that AB stands for able-bodied seaman as well as, or instead of, able seaman. Able seaman was originally entered using the abbreviation AB instead of the more obvious AS in ships' muster books or articles. Such an entry was likely to avoid confusion with ordinary seaman (OS). Later the abbreviation began to be written as A.B., leading to the folk-etymological able-bodied seaman. The "correct" term, able seaman, remains in use in legal documents, in seaman's papers, and aboard ship.
