Lives of the First World War

The Roll of Honour, which hangs in St Peter & St Paul's Church, Belton and lists 49 names of those from Belton who served in the Great War 1914 – 1919. Only the men’s names are listed, with a cross to signify those who died; no regiments are given.

The marriage of Rupert's sister Annie Flowers to Henry Albert Gee took place at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Little Gaddesden on 20th June 1900, following which this photo was taken at Ashridge. Their mother Charlotte is seated on the right hand end of the row of chairs and their father Thomas 3rd in from the right. Their sister Lizzie, 19, is on the left hand chair with their brother Herbert, 16, behind her, partly hidden by her hat. Their younger sister Dorothy, 4, is seated on the ground, front left; Rupert, nearly 6, is seated next to her.

A 2018 photo of the memorial, erected in approximately 1920 at the junction of New Road and Potten End Road, Berkhamsted Common, to commemorate the Inns of Court OTC who trained at Berkhamsted and those who subsequently lost their lives in the war. The wording reads: "In memory of the Inns of/ Court Officers Training/ Corps who in this neighbour/hood trained over twelve/ thousand men to serve/ as commissioned officers/ in the Great War 1914-1918/ + and in affectionate/ remembrance of the two/ thousand who gave their/ lives for their country/ this monument is erected/ by members and friends/ of the Corps/ salus populi suprema lex". The latin inscription translates as "the safety of the people is the supreme law".

2018 photo of the notice board erected on Berkhamsted Common, close to the site of the section of trenches cleared in 2012 - 2013. The board outlines the activities of "The Devil's Own" while stationed in the area.

The 2018 Revised Roll of Honour, which now hangs in St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Little Gaddesden in addition to the earlier Roll. The name of Rupert Flowers, Inns of Court Officer Training Corps has been added.
