Title: The Falklands Islands Volunteers

Description: During the First World War the Colony of the Falkland Islands was placed on a war footing and the Falkland Islands Volunteers mobilised for service in military outposts around Port Stanley. On 8th December 1914 the smoke of a German fleet was spotted; the outpost on Sappers Hill subsequently provided valuable information on the ships’ movements. The end result was the Battle of the Falklands and the destruction of Admiral von Spee’s flagship, SMS Scharnhorst, armoured cruiser SMS Gneisenau and light cruisers SMS Leipzig and SMS Nürnberg. 36 Falkland Islanders, including members of the Falkland Island Volunteers, enrolled with His Majesty's Forces, 10 losing their lives on overseas service. The local government invested heavily in the Falkland Island Volunteers - an estimated £10,000 in 1915, the highest expenditure on any government department that year. In 1919, the Falkland Island Volunteers were stood down and resumed a peace-time training routine.
