Studio photo of Pvt. Edgar George Chappell AVC taken in 1915. At this time he was serving with the ‘D’ Mobile Veterinary Section, Headquarters Staff of the 4th London Mounted Brigade. The unit was stationed in North Walsham, Norfolk prior to embarkation to Egypt. Pvt. Chappell looks his young age in this photo (just turned 18). When he enlisted in September 1914, he claimed he was 19 years old but was actually 17.

Letter: Pvt. Chappell to Edith Stanton May 1915

First part of a letter written to Edith Stanton describing the voyage to Egypt (April-May 1915) on board a troopship. The letter includes a narrative of 8 days spent in the Dardanelles Strait picking up survivors from the start of the Gallipoli Campaign. The letter is transcribed in 'share a story'.

Egyptian postal stamp (5 millieme) taken from the envelope of a letter from Edgar George Chappell to Edith Stanton. The stamp shows the Sphinx at Giza. This stamp denomination appears to be the standard for letters back to the UK.

On Active Service privilege 'green' envelope

Front and back of an 'On Active Service' privilege ('honour', 'green') envelope (AF W8078) which contained a letter sent by Pvt. Edgar George Chappell AVC to Miss Edie Stanton. Letters in these envelopes were not normally censored regimentally. The reverse side of the envelope (below) shows the certification signed by Edgar indicating that the contents of the correspondence was 'nothing but private and family matters'. The green colour of the envelope has faded over the last hundred years or so.

2/Lt Edgar George Chappell in early 1916. The location is most likely the Imperial School of Instruction at Zeitoun (Heliopolis, Cairo) where Edgar was training in early February. The building in the background is probably one of the accommodation huts. The original photo is small, bleached and discoloured and printed on a poorly cut rectangle of photographic paper. Edgar acquired a camera in early 1916 and many of his photos are printed in the same way. It is likely that he processed them himself.

Two copies of this photo are extant, one annotated 'Your loving son Edgar 22 February 1916', the other 'Yours - Edgar 23 February 1916' (the dates being one day apart). At the time the photograph was taken Edgar was attached to the 7th Training Battalion, Heliopolis Camp, Cairo.

2/Lt Edgar Chappell (9 East Lancashire Regiment) sitting to the right in an improvised eating area at a tented camp. Two parallel shallow trenches have formed both seating ‘pews’ and a table while a sheet of canvas supported by wooden stakes provided the shade. The meal the officers are eating appears to be accompanied with wine (three bottles are visible on the ‘table’). Two of the officers are sporting their slouch hats with the brims down, while Edgar favours the ‘digger’ style. Photograph taken somewhere on the British held Salonika front, most likely in June 1916.

Registered envelope from Malta July 1915.

A 9 x 6” strengthened envelope sent by Pvt Edgar George Chappell (A.V.C) to his sweetheart Miss Edie Stanton of Lee Farm, Colworth, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, England. The letter was registered at the G.P.O. Valletta (Malta) and received in London on 30 August 1915. The date of the Malta franking (on the front of the letter) indicates the 23rd but the month is obscured, although it was likely July. Edgar was in Gallipoli in August 1915 and the letter may have been sent en route from Egypt. His handwriting is extremely elegant.

Photograph taken by 2/Lt Edgar George Chappell of two RAMC staff at one of the entrances to Imtarfa Hospital, Malta. They have a pleasant look of familiarity with the photographer and were likely part of his medical support. It is possible that the officer is Lt-Colonel George Basil Price who commanded the Imtarfa facility. Colonel Price presided over the Medical Board that reported on Edgar’s condition and recommend his transfer back to England (Army Form A45, September 12, 1916).

One side of the stone built Imtarfa Hospital showing the ornate architecture. Columns support arches which open on to a terrace. The latter is overlooked by a first floor balcony, partly covered, which is bordered by a stone balustrade. Patient occupying a hospital bed in an officer’s ward at Imtarfa Hospital, Malta. The photograph illustrates the high standard of the medical facility. The officer is wearing striped pyjamas and occupying a good sized bed in what appears to be a light and airy room. His uniform hangs on hooks on the wall and a bell push for emergencies and an individual light switch are within easy reach. An ample sized bedside cabinet contains his personal items and the top has the essentials of newspaper, cigarettes (in a can) and a cup of tea. Edgar Chappell must have befriended this officer as he is featured in several photographs. It is probable that his bed was close to that occupied by Edgar. Photograph taken in September 1916.

Church Army envelope from France 24.7.18.

This Church Army envelope contained the letter written on 24 July 1918 by a chaplain working at the No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station in France. This gave Edith Chappell some information on Lt. E. G. Chappell’s condition following his wounding on July 23. The envelope is franked Field Post Office A, 25 July 1918 and has been stamped by the censor (passed by censor No. 4389).

Church Army letter from France 24.7.1918

Letter received by Edith Chappell from a chaplain working with the No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Blendecques, France. The letter on Church Army stationary and dated 24 July 2018 reads: ‘Dear Madam, Your husband Lt. Edgar Chappell has asked me to write and let you know that he was admitted into this Hospital today suffering from wounds in back and legs. I do not think that he is seriously injured and at present there is no cause for anxiety. He is in good spirit and sends his best love and hopes that you will not worry. Everything possible is being done for him. He will let you know later how he will get on.’

Letter from hospital, Calais, July 1918.

A page from the letter sent by Lt. Edgar George Chappell to his wife Edith. This was written from his hospital bed at the 30 General Hospital Calais probably soon as he arrived there on July 26. The letter describes the events of 24th of July when he was wounded by a shell blast. The page reads: ‘well I will tell you why and how it came about. I had to go on parade at 10 o’clock to a rifle inspection and after that I had to take another officer around the battle positions allotted to this Battalion. So took him and a servant as bodyguard. Jerry was at that time shelling the railway on our right, he the very devil, quite half to three-quarters of a mile away. Then I suppose he spotted a water cart that was coming down the road in front of us so of course he let drive at them and made a bad shot of it but got us instead.

Shrapnel hole in Field Message Book.

Lt. Edgar George Chappell’s Field Message Book (Army Book 153) pierced completely by a shrapnel hole. Edgar was wounded on July 24, 1918 by a shell burst near St. Venant in the Pas-de-Calais, France. He received eight separate shrapnel wounds from this shell. It is likely that this book was in the right hip pocket of his tunic and the offending piece of shrapnel was that which produced a furrowed wound over his hip (at the iliac crest). The book may have prevented more serious damage from this shell fragment

Postcard from Fishmongers’ Hall Hospital 9.8.18.

Both sides of the postcard that was sent by the Red Cross to Edith Chappell informing her of Lt Chappell’s admission to the Fishmongers’ Hall Hospital, London Bridge. The postcard dated 9 August 1918 reads: ‘Lt. E. G. Chappell (E. Lancs.) was admitted to this hospital last evening, injury G.S.H. (gun shot wound) chest, abdomen and legs. Condition satisfactory. Visiting hours 11.30 to 1 and from 3 to 5 daily’.

Letter from Woodford Camp, Plymouth, March 1917

The reverse of an envelope that contained a letter sent by 2/Lt Edgar George Chappell to Edith Chappell who was at Lee Farm, Colworth Estate, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire. The envelope was postmarked Plymouth (on the obverse) and dated 28 March 1917 and arrived in Sharnbrook on the 29th. This regimental stationary bears the crest of the 3rd (Reserve Battalion) East Lancashire Regiment (inset shows detail). Edgar was attached to the 3rd Battalion in early 1917 at their camp in Woodford, Plymouth but was only fit for Home Duties as he was still suffering periodic malaria attacks. The actual letter is not extant.

Autographed programme, 47 Training Reserve Btn, 19

A musical recital programme on the letterhead of the 47th Training Reserve Battalion. This bears thirty-three signatures including that of 2/Lt Edgar Chappell (top right corner). The provenance is unknown but it appears to have been a souvenir of the event. It is possible that the function included a meal and the programmes were circulated around the table to collect all the signatures of the participants. As this recital was obviously connected with the 47th Training Reserve Battalion, it could be speculated that the function was organised as a social event at the culmination of a training course. The East Lancashire Regimental badge is still linked to this TR Battalion, a reflection of its origins from the 10th (Reserve) Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment.

Front and inside right panel of the 1918 Christmas card of the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion East Lancashire Regiment based at Saltburn-by-the Sea. This was sent by Lt. Edgar George Chappell to his wife Edith. Front panel shows the 3rd Battalion crest with a red, yellow and black ribbon. Inside left panel (not shown) has the last stanza of Rudyard Kipling’s 1914 poem ‘For All we have and are’ – ‘No easy hope or lies shall bring us to our goal, But iron sacrifice of body, will, and soul. There is but one task for all - One life for each to give. What stands if Freedom fall? who dies if England live? Inside right panel -signed by Edgar – ‘Yours Ever & Aye, Edgar, with my fondest love’.

Lt. Edgar George Chappell’s programme of the ‘Grand Social and Dance’ held by the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion East Lancashire Regiment at the Assembly Hall in Saltburn-by-the-Sea on 29th January 1919. The evening of music and dancing was a celebration before the start of demobilisation. Presumably Edith Chappell was in Saltburn for the event. Post Office savings for Master Allan Roy Chappell.

The first two pages of entries in the Post Office Saving bank book of an account opened for 8-month old Roy Chappell on 26th June 1918 (inset photo shows Roy on the 24th June). Edith and Edgar deposited money (mostly £2) every month from June 1918 to April 1919 which was likely sourced in part from the ‘Soldier’s Separation Allowance’. The book was in use until 1943 when a replacement was issued. It gives five consecutive addresses for the family from 1918 until 1943 from which the chronology of moves can be deduced. viz: 74 Wilberforce Road., Finsbury Park, London (1918); 8 Queen Street, Rushden (1921-1933); 52 Saffron Road, South Wigston, Leicester (1933-1938); 10 Park Road, Romily, Stockport (1938-1940); 71, Chaddesden Park Road, Derby (1940-1943). [Note: from 1919 to 1921 the Chappells lived at Lee Farm, Colworth, Sharnbrook but this address is not entered in the book. The Derby address remained their residence until 1948]

Portion of a letter, dated April 6, 1919 that was sent by Lt. Edgar Chappell from the regimental base at Saltburn-by-the-Sea to his wife Edith. As with several other wartime letters received from Edgar she retained only the address portion. This letter, written on regimental stationary, was probably the last he wrote home while still in uniform. He was demobbed on April 24, 1919.

Edgar and Roy Chappell , Chaddesden, Derby 1944.

Edgar Chappell with his son Roy in the back-garden of 71 Chaddesden Park Road in early 1944. Roy, at this time, was a Cpl. in the RE Section of the 1st SAS Regiment, which was based at Darvel in Ayrshire . He had not long returned from the Italian Campaign during which the 1 SAS (as the Special Raiding Squadron) had conducted four operations (all seaborne assaults). In the latter part of this deployment he had been hospitalised. Although Roy was in Derby on leave, he still looked a little jaded from his recent experiences.

Roll of Honour, St. Peter’s Church, Sharnbrook.

The ‘Roll of Honour’ list on the interior wall of St. Peter’s Church, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire. It shows the ‘names of those from this Parish on Active Service for their King and Country’ (the 1914 - 1918 appear to have been added later). Both Edgar Chappell and his father, Joseph Henry Chappell are shown. Henry enlisted in the Pioneers of the Royal Engineers in March 1915 at aged fifty and performed mostly clerical duties.

Edith Chappell’s British Railway permit which allowed her to be present on No. 8 Platform, Liverpool Lime Street Station to see the departure of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh after their Lancashire tour on October 21, 1954. Retirement good wishes, October 12, 1957.

Letter to Edgar, dated 12th October 1957, from Mr. S. B. Lovegrove, the District Operating Superintendent, London Midland Region of British Railways. The letter offers good wishes for a long and happy retirement but does intimate that Edgar had been having some health issues. Edgar’s job efficiency was praised – ‘I would add that when you were relieving at our stations we were all aware the job was in very capable hands!’.

Edith Chappell’s National Registration card.

The replacement National Registration identity card of Edith Chappell issued on September 18, 1948 when the Chappells moved to 15 Rothesay Road, Morecambe and Heysham. The National Registration was a WW2 initiative (National Registration Act, 1939) and began on September 29, 1939. The personal cards had to be carried at all times and produced on demand to the Police or HM Armed Forces. Non-compliance was an offence punishable by a fine, imprisonment or both. The Act was not repealed until February 1952. Top of image is the back and front of the card, bottom of image is the interior pages.
