Sir James Stuart Coats, 3rd Baronet MC (13 April 1894 – 26 October 1966) was a British skeleton racer who competed in the late 1940s. He finished seventh in the men's skeleton event at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz. He served as President of the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club from 1954 to 1956. He married Lady Amy Gwendolyn Gordon-Lennox who served as a VAD and was the daughter of the Duke of Richmond. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1918. During World War II he commanded and gave his name to the Coats Mission charged with evacuating the royal family in the result of a German invasion

The Coats Mission was a special British army unit established in 1940 for the purpose of evacuating King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and their immediate family in the event of German invasion.It was led by Major James Coats, MC, Coldstream Guards, later Lieutenant-Colonel Sir James Coats, Bt.

Lady Amy Gwendoline Gordon-Lennox was born on 5 May 1894. She was the daughter of Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, 8th Duke of Richmond and Hilda Madeline Brassey. She married Sir James Stuart Coats, 3rd Bt., son of Sir Stuart Auchincloss Coats, 2nd Bt. and Jane Muir Greenlees, on 11 December 1917
