Two photos of the cap badge worn by Charles Cooper during his service in the Royal Engineers, 5th Labour Battalion. The tarnished one was found on the site of the Somme Offensive of 1916. Charles Cooper served there in C Company during the offensive and after from 29th September 1916 to 10th January 1917.

Pioneer C Morrell. 704 Company, Labour Corps. 1918

Pioneer Morrell was in grandad's R.E. Labour Battalion with him and in the 704 Company, Labour Corps. He was killed near Grevillers on the Somme on the 4th of January 1918.

Commonwealth war graves records from Grevillers Cemetery near Bapaume together with extracts from the service records of Charles Morrell. Together they show through regiment numbers and army units that he was in the same units as my grandfather Charles Cooper and that they were in battle on the Somme near Bapaume on the 4th of January 1918 with the 704 Company, Labour Corps. On the telegram to his mother it ends with Proelicas which was the code in communication for Battle Casualty.

Labour Corps cap badges worn by Charles Cooper.

When the Labour Corps was formed in 1917 the men were given the general service cap badges to wear seen on the left. After the spring offensive in March 1918 the second one was designed, made and issued to the Corps following the War Office decision to arm some of the Companies and put them into the fight. A rifle was added to the pick and spade.

Charles's sister Elsie's marriage certificate.

The 1881 census record was incorrectly filled in for Charles's older sister. She was recorded as Edith born in Bognor but in fact her name was Elsie and she was born in Balham. This marriage record shows her mother and father to be Charles and Augusta Cooper and the family address 10 Martindale Road, Balham.

Two fellow recruits. Charles Morrell and Frederic.

The records show that both Charles Morrell and Frederick Stringer were in A Company R E 5th Labour Battalion. Charles Morrell died of abdominal injuries on the 4th of January 1918, Frederick Stringer died of bronchial pneumonia on the 5th of November 1918 just six days before Armistice. Both their telegrams end with Proelicas meaning Battle Casualty giving proof that they were on or very near the battlefield.

Charles Cooper Death Certificate

Copy of Charles Cooper's death certificate registered by his son Frederick. He died on the 25th of January 1967 in the Q.A. Hospital, Cosham. He died from bronchitis and pneumonia after a fall at home which fractured his left femur leaving him immobile.

Family at War.

Charles's family by marriage were the spouses and children of his sister in laws Ellen and Annie Taylor. Three of them went to war in 1915, one in 1916. The family tree shows them. I am remembering them all as well as his cousin/brother in law Alfred.
