    This undated newspaper cutting, with photo, summarises his war career from 1914 as a military postman (Royal Engineers), his late 1917 illness in Italy and return to an Edinburgh Hospital where he died, then his funeral in Warrington.

Car joyride interrupted by breakdown and overnight with 1st Div. supply column, repair and return to Bethune then horsedrawn cart to 5th Infantry Brigade HQ at La Couture - dinner with Worcs. and Brigade staff. First mention of action - heavy artillery all night. Artillery fire again in morning of 5 Jan. Monoplane seen overhead (German?) and (anti?) aircraft guns.

    Diary entries. Continued 5 Jan entry and 6 Jan mention German shells, the 'fine sight' of star shells at night and ongoing heavy artillery. Rumours of leave for the infantry and relief of men in trenches (first mention) the Oxfords being replaced by the Worcs. Story of death of Worcs. major and officer behind being hit by same bullet but saved by his cigarette case. Mentions seeing the Prince of Wales (Edward). 8 Jan move from La Coutre to Lelobe on horseback and a billet with first bed since England.

    The inside cover of this well known pocket diary and notebook. Tom has notes at the beginning and end. His diary entries are sparse and he doesn't give as much information as in the first diary. Is this because he had become bored with keeping a diary, was he becoming tired and maybe ill well before he enters hospital? Nonetheless he keeps track of the places he passes through.

    The entry for 27/2/1917 shows his departure from Reninghelst (near Ypres) in Belgium for across the border to Eperlecques in France. Reninghelst was far enough from the front to be a base for field ambulances. On 19/3 he heads back into Belgium.

For 27 August it says: 'Turned out of hut by 41 RHQ & spent night with Sgt Gibson.' On 4 Sept 'Remove billet to BHQ'. 5 September: 'Approached Capt. re leave. Remind next week'. The other entries record his & Sgt Evans movements in the Ypres area.
