known 20th January 1916

The London Standard reported Sidney Hathaway missing. The article quoted a letter written by an RFC Major to Hathaway ‘s mother stating “He went out on escort duty with Lieutenant Kemp over the lines on the 12th inst. They left here about 7.30 am, and none of our other machines appear to have seen them. I fear there is little doubt that they have had to land on the other side, and are prisoners. It is my sincere hope that you may hear from him in Germany, for the Germans always treat RFC men in their hands very well, and allow them special privilege”. Sadly that Hope was in vain.
