George Frederick Heppenstall was born on 22 October 1894 in Clowne, Derbyshire, the son of John William and Ann Heppenstall. In January 1900, the family had moved to Hepworth where George was baptised in Holy Trinity Church. In the 1911 census, the family are living at Little Law, Hepworth and George aged 16 is working as a piecener. George survived the war but in 1919, he was stationed in County Cork, Ireland awaiting demobilisation when he was killed in an explosion on 26 September. He is buried in the churchyard of Castlecomer (St Mary) Church of Ireland in County Kilkenny.
