Having gone through the Siege of Kut 7/12/15-29/4/16 with his 82nd Battery RFA he became a PoW when the starving garrison surrendered to the Turkish. Due to severe wounds or sickness he was immediately exchanged and sent downriver but died shortly after. However his grave appears lost and he is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
