Ernest's death

Ernest's aircraft was the 75th to be shot down by Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, the German fighter ace known as the Red Baron. 2nd Lieutenant Ernest David Jones and 2nd Lieutenant Robert Francis Newton, in aircraft type R.E.8 (A3868) of 52 Squadron, were both killed. The incident took place at 12:30 on 2nd April 1918, at Hill 104, NE of Moreuil. (The date of the deaths of these two men has also been recorded as 3rd April - most likely the result of being reported late in the day.)
