John Pickles was the son of Edmondson and Louisa Pickles, née Coke and brother of Private Edmondson Pickles (93697) (q.v.). Their father was born at either Barrowford or Blacko, Lancashire and mother at Plymouth, Devon. 1901 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire Census: Clough Fold - John Pickles, aged 7 years, born Barnoldswick, son of Louisa Pickles, widow. 1911 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire Census: 8, Stuart Street - John Pickles, aged 18 years, born Barnoldswick, son of Louisa and stepson of John McGarragin. [Louisa had married John McGarragin in 1904.] The British Army Service Record for John Pickles exists but may be incomplete. The informal title of the 10th (Service) Bn East Yorkshire Regiment was the Hull Commercials. A short biography of John is included in: ‘Barnoldswick - A small Town’s part in conflicts 1800 to 2014’ by Peter Ian Thompson (2014). Recorded in David Bilton’s book “Hull Pals” as serving with the 10th Battalion. Killed in action, aged 24 on the 3rd May 1917 at Arras (Oppy wood). Commemorated on the Arras memorial. Resided: 8, Stewart Street, Barnoldswick. Born: Barnoldswick Enlisted: Barnoldswick Named on the Barnoldswick war memorial. Enlisted originally in the 3rd East Yorkshire Regiment, aged 22 years and 10 months. Height on enlistment 5 foot 2.5 inches.
