Fred, my great uncle.

Fred, my great uncle.

19th March 1887 - 4th June 1916

Fred was born in Coatbridge, 1887 worked for Caledonian Tube Works before enlisting in November, 1914. Fred was John and Mary Ann McShanes son, he had four brothers and five sisters, they lived in Dundyvan Road, Old Monkland. His brother Henry was my grandfather. He was living with his married sister in Airdrie, when he enlisted. He was at Bramshott before going to France. Fred was with the Royal Scots Fusiliers 6th Battalion when he enlisted. They were involved in the Battle of Loos. They were based in Vermelles, Hohenzollern and Hulloch. On 4th June 1916 Fred was killed in action at Hulloch, as far as we can ascertain he was killed with 9 others. He is buried at Vermelles British War Cemetery Grave III.E.6. I have copies of all records l have cited, including a copy of his will dated 8.5.1915. He left everything to his sister Maria Bodie nee McShane. Freds' brothers were all in America when this happened. I also have a copy of the Coatbridge memorial which has a photo of Fred, it is the only photograph we have been able to find. He is commemorated at the Airdrie War Memorial.
